Rent a Signal number
Choose Signal in Noir SMS and pick a US, Canadian or UK number. It's reserved for you for 20 minutes.
Signal still needs a phone number to register, even though you can now chat through a username and hide your number from everyone. During registration, Signal sends a 6-digit code by SMS, may show a captcha first, and offers a phone call if the text is slow. Noir SMS rents you a carrier mobile number for 20 minutes and shows that SMS in your dashboard. Because Signal is built around privacy, many people register with a separate number so their personal one isn't tied to the account. After that, the Signal PIN and Registration Lock are what keep the account secure.
Yes. Signal registers accounts with an SMS verification code, and a Noir SMS mobile number from the US, Canada or UK can receive it. Rent the number, enter it in Signal, complete the captcha if one appears, and copy the code from your dashboard. Then create your Signal PIN and turn on Registration Lock. No SMS within 20 minutes means an automatic refund.

Signal offers a call option when the code takes a while. Noir SMS numbers can't receive voice calls, so wait for the timer and request the SMS again instead.
The provider will reassign the number eventually. With Registration Lock on, anyone who tries to register that number needs your Signal PIN. The lock lapses if you stop using Signal for about a week, so keep the app active.
In Settings > Privacy > Phone Number, set who can see and find you by number to the most private options, then share a Signal username. Signal Desktop and iPad link by scanning a QR code from your phone, so they never need the number.
Usually yes. Signal only needs to deliver its registration SMS. Noir SMS provides mobile numbers from carriers rather than VoIP lines, so the code normally arrives in your dashboard within a minute or two. If Signal doesn't send it, or the number is still protected by someone else's Registration Lock, cancel and you're refunded.
Signal uses phone numbers for registration, to limit spam, and so contacts who already have your number can find you. Since 2024 you can hide your number and talk to people through a username, but registering still requires a number that can receive a verification code. A separate number keeps your personal one out of it.
Your account keeps working on the phone where you registered. Your Signal PIN and Registration Lock stop someone with the recycled number from taking it over while you stay active. Reinstalling Signal or switching phones without Signal's transfer feature would require a new SMS, so always use the built-in transfer when you change devices.
Yes. Signal Desktop and Signal for iPad are linked devices that you connect by scanning a QR code with the Signal app on your phone. They don't receive their own SMS, so once your phone is registered with the Noir SMS number, linking works exactly as it does for any other account.
Using a separate number for privacy is legitimate and common. Noir SMS numbers may only be used to verify your own accounts, following Signal's terms; impersonation, spam, fraud and bulk account creation are prohibited. Keep in mind that a second number keeps your personal number away from contacts, but it doesn't make you anonymous.
