US Virtual Number to Set Up Google Voice
Google Voice gives you a free US phone number, but only after you link and verify a US number you already have. During setup at voice.google.com, you choose a Voice number, then Google asks for a linked number and sends a 6-digit code by text or call. Google Voice doesn't accept other Google Voice numbers and often rejects other VoIP lines. Noir SMS rents US mobile numbers from carriers that can receive that text. Canadian and UK numbers won't work here, because personal Google Voice is available only in the United States.

Pick your Voice number
Sign in at voice.google.com or in the Voice app, accept the terms, search by city or area code, and select a number.
Verify the linked number
Enter the Noir SMS number, send the code by text rather than call, and type the 6-digit code from your dashboard to claim your Voice number.
Before you verify Google Voice
The linked number can't take calls
Google Voice can forward calls to linked numbers, but Noir SMS numbers receive SMS only. After setup, turn off forwarding to the rented number and answer calls in the Voice app.
Keep your Voice number active
Google may reclaim a personal Google Voice number that isn't used for calls or texts for about three months. Use it regularly, and add a US number you keep as a linked number when you can.
US location and eligibility still apply
Google Voice for personal use is available only in the US and may refuse setup when you appear to be elsewhere. A US number completes the verification step but doesn't change location or account eligibility.

Can I get a Google Voice number without my own phone number?
You need a US number that can receive Google's verification code, but it doesn't have to be your personal SIM. A Noir SMS US mobile number can receive the text during setup. Google decides which numbers it accepts, and it usually refuses VoIP numbers, including other Google Voice numbers.
Can I set up Google Voice from Canada or the UK?
Personal Google Voice is a US service. You need a US linked number, and Google may block setup if your account or location appears to be outside the US. Google Workspace customers can use Voice for business in more countries, but that's set up by an administrator through a separate process.
Why did Google Voice say my number can't be used?
Google rejects numbers that are VoIP, already linked to another Voice account, or flagged by its systems. If that happens with a Noir SMS number, cancel after 2 minutes for an instant refund, or let the 20 minutes run out for an automatic one, and try another US number.
Do I need the linked number after Google Voice is set up?
Not for daily use; calls and texts work in the Voice app and on the web. You may need a linked number again if you change your Voice number or if Google asks you to verify again. Plan to add a US number you keep for the long term.
Is it allowed to use a rented number to set up Google Voice?
For your own personal Voice number, yes. Google's acceptable use policy and Noir SMS's rules both prohibit using Voice for spam, robocalls, fraud or claiming numbers in bulk. Also keep in mind that many banks and apps reject Google Voice numbers because they're VoIP.
